Potala Palace is a UNESCO world heritage and features an
overwhelming array of intricate murals, stupas, tombs of eight
past Dalai Lamas, exquisite Tibetan Mandalas and other relics of Tibetan
history. Jokhang temple lying 2 km to the east is another Tibetan
religious site. If you wish to glimpse into Tibetan culture, what could
be more insightful than exploring Barkhor markets! As you wander around
the market, you witness Tibetan arts, culture, custom and tradition.
Depending on your interest, you can
make a day trip Namtso Lake, stopping by Yampachen Hot Spring or
spend 2 - 3 days in the "Switzerland of Tibet" - Nyinchi to
experience the lush plantation and glacier, or you can add Tsetang
and Yarlung to your itinerary- another area rich in history and
Buddhism influence.
For those adventure-minded
travelers, treks to Mt. Everest base camp will certainly be the highlight of your trip. From
Everest Base Camp (5200m/17000ft) you can enjoy an uninhibited view of the
north face of Mt. Everest. Sunset and sunrise views of Mt. Everest
are not to be missed.
Kailash Mountain and Lake
Manasarovor Kora tours are not just pilgrims' destination but also
backpacker/trekkers' heaven. Ngari Prefecture where Mt. Kailash and
Lake Manasarovor remains one of the few uninhabited areas of Tibet.
